The end of summer signals that many of us are immersed in work schedules plus soccer practices, and helping the kids with homework. Then there are football-filled Sundays that cut into your handyman time in the fall. There’s still time though to tackle a few remodeling projects before the snow flies. Your goal may simply be to freshen up the appearance of your home, but you also want to know that your hard work will increase your home’s value.

Here are some easy home improvements you can finish before Thanksgiving. Each project costs less than $500 and should require less than a day’s work.

1) DIY Projects Add a Backsplash

Adding a new backsplash is the easiest way to add some pizazz to your kitchen. Ceramic tile is the most popular way to add that backsplash. You can go from country to modern in a snap with all the variety of options available in ceramic tile. Estimated Price: $6-12 per sq foot

2) Replace your Vanity Cabinet & Toilet

Even relatively minor updates to your bathroom can produce a return on investment of over 100% easily. Toilets fit neatly over existing plumbing and they are surprisingly easy to install. Make sure you get the modern water-saving models that save on your water bills and appeal to buyers when it’s time to sell. For a new vanity be creative and save hundreds of dollars by using an old dresser as the cabinet for your new vanity. Then all you have to do is cut out a hole for the sink and install the sink and taps. Estimated Price: $200 (vanity), $250 (toilet)

3) DIY Projects Paint a Room

A fresh coat of paint can transform any room in your house. Here you could gain a return of over 200% on your investment with freshly painted interior walls. You just need to make sure the colors are right for the room and your home. You can also limit costly mistakes and spills by covering things with a drop cloth and using painter’s tape. Estimated Price: $30 per 4L can

4) Install Crown Molding

Having crown molding in your home could make the difference when it’s time to sell. This feature is one that most buyers appreciate when looking for a home. Fair warning: Installing crown molding is the trickiest task on our list. There’s a lot involved in cutting the angle right along with nailing them up. DIY Projects A miter saw is a must and a nail gun makes the job easier. Follow the “measure thrice, cut once” rule to limit waste. You might also experiment with cutting some waste wood before trying to cut the real piece. Estimated Price: $3 per linear foot

5) Replace the Front Door

A new front door will more than recoup your investment as it is the first thing prospective buyers see when they come up to your home. You can expect over a 100% ROI and a added bonus is the buyer will enjoy the benefits of an energy-efficient door which will save them money on energy costs for years. Estimated Price: $150-$500 or more
